Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these medications should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
